Artist Statement:
Timothy Hyde
This exhibition, entitled “Book of Job,” revisits two long-term projects that have consumed much of my creative energy and time in the past two decades. Both projects explore quite similar themes. The work has been shown before in various exhibitions, most recently in the Washington, DC area in 2024.
The photographs investigate the notion that we humans confront fundamentally hostile forces in our universe, natural or man-made. We confront them as individuals, as families, and as communities. Such forces are often perilous, frequently violent, and sometimes threaten our very survival. Societies have created mighty defenses against these threats, erecting tsunami walls, lights for the dark recesses of the night, and educating our children against hate. But the our prospects are scarcely less grim today than they ever were. And like Job we are not entirely innocent.
The two long-term projects are 1) natural disasters, 2) neighbor-against-neighbor violence, the ever-present scourge of our species.
