Redemption
“Art is restoration: the idea is to repair the damages that are inflicted in life, to make something that is fragmented—into something whole” —Louise Bourgeois
Creating this body of work was a cathartic process of unravelling, clarifying and using my intuition to heal, repair and transform. Thru the act of painting, I discovered a deeper meaning and message from traumatic experiences in childhood. When I view Louise Bourgeois’s sculptures and drawings, I see that she uses her creative outpouring to make sense of the mystery of her early years –facing both the magic and pain of her childhood. The deepest realization that came to me in conceptualizing this series of paintings: no matter what my/our experiences are in life, there is a connective energy of love always present and active. This body of work is an invitation to witness the transformative experience of healing, and to consider art as one tool for renewal.
Biography:
Currently residing in Richmond, Virginia, Susan is a member of Artspace and an artist whose work embodies a deep exploration of the intersection between art and spirituality. Her journey in the visual arts began in college, where she found the magic of art making in the painting studio. This passion further expanded during her pursuit of a Master’s degree in Transpersonal Psychology in 1991, which led her to embrace art as a spiritual practice—one that transcends traditional techniques and categories.
Susan’s art is challenging to categorize, reflecting the complexity of emotions and her unique perspective on life. Often associated with Visionary Art, her work delves into the unseen, expressing her inner world through a combination of materials and mediums. Through each piece, Susan invites viewers to connect with multi layered human experiences, offering a space for reflection and spiritual insight. Each painting is a dialogue between the artist and the canvas, with the work directing the choice of medium—be it oil, cold wax, acrylic, watercolor, or collage.
Exhibition history includes solo shows at Artworks and Boyd Gallery, as well as participation in numerous group exhibitions, such as those at the Richmond Public Library with Brightpoint Topics in Watercolor, Crossroads Art Center, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School, and the Jewish Community Center Art Gallery. Susan also teaches Art Playshops at Artspace. Notably, Susan won the 2021 First Place John Tyler Community College Foundation Art Award.
