Artist Statement

Focusing on the complexities of feminine identity, my collage portraits feature popular representations of women constructed from original source materials. My current work started as an archival exercise, isolating and distilling the cultural messages packed into the pages of American mail-order catalogs. But as I began to familiarize myself with the Montgomery Ward catalogs of the 1940's, I quickly developed a more emotional relationship with the models, many of whom reappeared in the catalogs year after year. My original understanding of them as two-dimensional ambassadors of an aspirational ideal gave way to the realization that these were real women, and that their iconic exterior belied a deeper humanity. I saw in their poses a dignity and strength that stood in sharp contrast to contemporary representations of women in advertising. My impulse was to reinterpret their roles as heroines and goddesses.
