Artist Statement
These works portrayed illustrate my Features Fade series in which the artwork "melts". These pieces came about through a fusion of my desire to stitch and my fascination with the face. We link much of our identity to our bodies and more specifically the face. With this piece I wanted to capture an image of a person as being in motion or changing instead of static. It challenges the viewer to think deeper into the phenomenological character of life and into the possibility of art as ephemeral. The idea for Features Fade really gelled when I remembered the practice of Tibetan sand mandalas. Tibetan monks spend days in a ritual event creating a piece of art out of sand. In the end it is taken to a body of water and washed away, emphasizing the ephemeral quality of life. The hours spent in creating my "portraits" are my meditation and the "melting" is my way of letting ideas of identity and attachment go. |
