Jane Favela, Age 12
"Dia the Dare Devil"
illustrated by MARK GROVENSTEEN

The soft breeze combed through Dia's bright, auburn hair. She pedaled faster as she approached the hill. She plummeted down to the bottom. The gentle breeze became a raging wind, threatening to cause Dia's bike to crash into the tall trees. She was half way down when the bike started to quiver. Dia's eyes widened in terror as her bike continued to wobble and shake. She stopped pedaling and stood on the pedals. She shifted her weight and propped one foot on her seat. She threw herself of her bike and onto the prickly grass. Her bike swerved an crashed into a tree. Dia stood and walked over to her bike. It was twisted and the front tire was flat. Dia sighed and carried the bike to the top of the hill.

"Hey, Mom. My bike-" Dia started.

"You biked down a hill, you jumped off, and it crashed into a tree. Heard it a million times." Mom said, sounding bored. She took the bike and put it in the back off their 4x4 silver pick truck.

"I'm used to it. When you were six, you decided to roll skate off the roof and into the pool."

"Yeah, I remember that. That was fun."

Mom laughed and hustled me into the truck.

"Time to go home." She said, climbing into the driver seat and revving the engine.
