Ethan Whitehead, Age 13
"The Crash"
illustrated by DANA FROSTICK

Jerry was riding his bicycle down a street in the Tour De Force. He was approaching the first hill smack in the middle of the pack. There were barbed-wire fences on either side. A rider in the front of the pack got tripped up in a pot hole, and he went down, rolling on top of his bike on the slanted hill. He fell into the barbed-wire--bike first, breaking the barbed-wire barrier and tumbling down the hill fast, at least 50 mph. Jerry followed closely behind, landing on the ground hard. His stomach was resting on the frame; the metal sharply poking him. The bike was okay, but Jerry was hurting. People helped him up and called for an ambulance. The ambulance came flying in fast. They took Jerry to the hospital and told him, "you only survived because of the bike." The bike had saved him from the fall and being shredded to bits by the barbed-wire. Now was his chance to get back into the race. Jerry pedaled hard to try to regain his position in the main pack. The race had been delayed because of the wreck, so he still had a chance. Jerry was still using the same bike since it had survived the fall just as he had. Jerry had 5 miles to go, and he was only a mile behind the main pack. He knew he needed to pour on the speed. Jerry dashed the whole mile to try to match the pace of the frontrunner. Inching toward the pack, Jerry overtakes them; he goes from near death to glory with all his teammates congratulating him for his comeback! Jerry hugged his bike and started home.
