Emily Jansen, Age 14
"Free Spirit"
illustrated by CLAIRE HILL

He rode his bike almost every day. His route almost never changed. Turn on Prince William, follow it until the intersection and take a right onto Sylvan Ridge, turn around and head back home at Princess Mary, and try not to get hit by a car. Simple enough, especially for someone who'd been riding bikes for years. It helped to take his mind off things. The stress from school, the anxiety he felt when he was with his friends, the heartbreak he felt about the girl who he thought would never like him back, all of it disappeared as the road beneath did the same. All of his emotions left him, and he was carefree for the whole ride. He enjoyed the wind whipping at his face, the trees flying by, and the idea that he didn't have to worry about anything other than the road before him. Only when he was on his bike did he know that everything was okay. And if he didnít know that, he didn't care. He was free and a free spirit like that is something that can't be tamed.
