Madison Chase Fairburn, Mechanicsville, VA

Between 2010-2014 I lost my teaching position - every other year - and moved around schools within my district, which prompted this body of work. This piece is one of fifteen prints, and one of three collars in my series "Cultivate." This is the first collar I made out of hay and dried grasses and it reflects the tension, restraint, and conflict I felt as I went in between jobs.
These beautiful and labor-intensive collars are a burden and a weight in every setting, and each collar also carries its own significance and underlying narrative. I made them from foliage and natural materials available a few weeks prior to photographing the subject. It was important to me that the materials reflected both my state of mind, but also the season when I was creating the garment.
