Ken Szmagaj, Harrisonburg, VA

I start with rhythmic surfaces that become evocative in some way. They come from gesture, touch, randomness and intuition. Later they are combined and worked as dualities. They are built around a horizon suggesting two kinds of space. One is intuitive, open and gestural, where the act of making occurs as a kind of natural phenomenon. The other is more ordered by conscious building and structuring, patterns suggesting mutations and the infinite nature of an expanding world. As I work and explore these spaces I think of them as a kind of mental universe. Fragmentary objects and illusionistic abstract constructions become traces of existence, presented as vague icons onto which one can project one’s self and meditate on possibilities.
