Madison Chase Fairburn presents "Cultivate," plant-based sculptural garments, accompanied by traditional silver gelatin prints in our Frable Gallery. The sculptural collars are crafted with hay, dried grass, evergreen limbs and berries. Fairburn then creates silver gelatin prints of models adorned with the garments in a natural setting. She is "interested in how these ornate garments limited my subject’s movements and stance. These beautiful and labor-intensive collars are a burden and a weight in every setting, but each collar also carries its own significance and underlying narrative." The construction of the garments and the printing process, mirror her seven-year career in teaching; they "both can be described best as labor-intensive and requiring devotion." Teacher of the year Nominee at Lee-Davis High School, Fairburn received her BFA from VCU, and is included in the VCU Painting and Printmaking Department Print Collection.
