Lauren Leake is an artist living and working in Richmond, Virginia. Lauren relocated from Charlottesville, Virginia in 2001 to pursue a career in Art Education and to develop her creative work. As an art teacher for Richmond Public Schools she sees first hand how important the creative process is to young students. To further explore her own voice as an artist, in 2009 Lauren enrolled in a master's program at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her show Forced Kinship, is her culmination of her work in painting, print and glass. Lauren will show her works in the Frable and Helena Davis galleries. Lauren states: "My oil paintings and mixed media works are abstract meditations on familiar relationships and their boundaries. I use the interaction between colors and layers of pigment to reference human interaction. I work in layers and apply veils of color, which obscure, alter, or blend into previous layers of color. The application of layers metaphorically references how relationships affect the person we are and influence who we become." Lauren also creates mixed media glass paintings. She layers finely ground colored glass to clear glass sheets and fires the work in a kiln. With each layer that melts and fuses together, she further explores the interaction of color as a metaphor for human interaction.
