Linda Rae Johnson has written a collection of 24 zany childhood memories that are southern fried and served up in a complex narrative that walks us down the paths of her childhood. She evokes the bittersweet humor of a small Louisiana town in the late 50's and early 60's as seen through a child's eyes. The vignettes are embellished where names and events have faded from her memory and to protect the innocent and not shame the guilty. They are voiced by "Linda Rae" from age nine to thirteen, the sassy know-it-all personification of Ms. Johnson's reflections. They are depicted in tones of innocence tainted by darkness, but kept alive by her offbeat humor.
As well as "Ouachita Girl - Volum 1," her first book of 16 stories, Ms. Johnson has a professional CD recording of 11 of these stories. She has enjoyed performing at The Greenbrier Resort, The Homestead, Roanoke's Mill Mountain Theater, Garth Newel Music Center and the Blue Ridge Writers Conference. Last year she also did a reading at New York's Pulse Ensemble Theater. In 2003, she appeared at Reynolda House in Winston-Salem, The Bay School of Cultural Arts in Mathews and read at Richmond's Main Library as part of their "Richmond Writers Series." She looks forward to returning to Garth Newel on September 12th. Ms. Johnson has also been an interviewed guest on WCVE Public Radio's "Gallery." This is Ms. Johnson's 5th appearance at Artspace Gallery, where she is a performing artist member. For the first time at Artspace, Ms. Johnson will "take the stage" and perform two vignettes as "little Linda Rae" which began in January with "The Field's" ten week workshop and culminated in an April performance at the Orange Door Gallery.
