April Exhibtions at Artspace
Richmond, VA - Artspace, located at 6 East Broad Street in downtown Richmond, is please to announce its April exhibitions. The public is invited to the First Friday Opening Reception on Friday, April 4th from 7-10pm. All exhibits will close Sunday, April 27th, 2003. Artspace is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 12 to 4 pm and by appointment. You can learn more about Artspace and its upcoming events at www.artspacegallery.org.
In the Foyer Gallery, Josefa Mulaire will be exhibiting "My American Son," a photographic essay exploring American culture.
Graphic designer and artist, Noah Scalin, will be exhibiting in the Helena Davis Gallery. "Fortunate" is an installation consisting of large-scale fabric reproductions of fortune cookie fortunes falling from the ceiling of the gallery. Scalin has collected fortune cookie fortunes, an American invention, for as long as he can remember. Scalin comments on their pseudo-sage advice, "they speak of the ‘me’ I’d like to be or hope I am perceived as, but they are also the evidence of a society that finds fortune so common that it is no wonder when it appears inside a cookie."
In the Main Gallery, we will be exhibiting "America," featuring new work by Amir Fallah. The exhibit will include large-scale drawing, paintings, and a wall mural. Fallah, a self-proclaimed "cultural hybrid," negotiates between American and Iranian values. By involving a range of familiar sources Fallah attempts to create work that deals with critical issues of personal identity in an unthreatening manner. Rather than adopting a single position, he prefers to live within and celebrate the cultural gap that exists between these two disparate cultures.
Lee Saloutos will be exhibiting "New Work 2001 - 2003" in the Skylight Gallery this April, showing landscape photography. His high saturation color transparency films and the Ilfochrome printing process yield rich images. Saloutos captures abstract qualities in landscapes, exploring color, shape, light and texture.
Exhibiting in our new Upstairs Gallery this month will be Artspace members Chris Semtner, John Bailey, and Doug Hayes. The artists will be exhibiting figurative work using painting, drawing, and photography.
