The Pathway of Least Resistance
Multi-media installation by Mark Guilbeau and Rian Kerrane

October 3-November 2, 2003
Main Gallery

Opening Reception for the Artists is Friday, October 3, 2003, 7-10 pm

These images are details from collaborative installations created by Mark Guilbeau and Rian Kerrane. A husband and wife duo, these sculptors began to collaborate in 2002. The ensuing series is entitled The Deluge Series.

The first image features Pig Tower from "The Troubles with Social Irresponsibility" at The Engine Room Gallery, Belfast, Northern Ireland. This collaborative installation was the culmination of Guilbeau and Kerrane' s experience and work produced while on the Flax Art Studio International Residency Programme in the summer of 2002. The tower is twenty feet high metal and wood structure holding hundreds of plaster money bank pigs.

The second image is a detail from "Propaganda and the Suppression of Sensory Perception" at the Rockefeller Arts Center, State University of New York, Fredonia, New York. Spinning Globe, in the center of the image, revolves on its axis and like much of the sculptural pieces is activated by the viewer's presence.

The third image is a detail of Pig Tower from "The Troubles with Social Irresponsibility" at The Engine Room Gallery, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Mother is featured in the fourth image. Six panels of latex dishwashing gloves inflate and deflate according to motion sensors to spell "Mother". Motorized Rocking Boats and folded paper boats fill the surrounding area in this detail from "The Obstructional Process of Self-Realization". This installation appeared at the University of Tulsa for the New Genre Festival in 2002. The detail shot from "The Penitentiary of Routine Conformification" has the bare interior of an unfinished office like space. There are crowd control stanchions leading to a teller window which houses a mummified bird slowly revolving under a lens. This room floats on stilts inside the Rutledge Gallery at Winthrop University in Rockhill, South Carolina.

The fifth image is a collaborative mixed media drawing by Guilbeau and Kerrane. Entitled Marriage, it is hung in the Artspace exhibition, "The Pathway of Least Resistance". The dates of this exhibition coincide with the tenth anniversary of these artists meeting. The work explores the four personalities that exist in a relationship, the individual's opinion of themselves and then, how each defines the other.
