Three Exhibitions Featured at Artspace in May

RICHMOND, VA - Artspace, located at 6 East Broad Street in downtown Richmond, is pleased to announce three exhibitions for May. "Variegated Patterns" by Washington, DC painter, Craig Kittner; "Bled in Ground" by Richmond painter Scott S. Phillips; and "MayMembers Images&Icons" the Second Annual Artspace Members Exhibition juried by, Diego Sanchez. The public is invited to the First Friday Opening Reception on Friday, May 4 from 7-9pm. The exhibit will close on Sunday, May 27, 2001. Artspace is open Wednesday – Sunday, from 12 - 4pm. You can learn more about Artspace at www.artspacegallery.org.

Craig Kittner’s "Variegated Patterns" is a new series of abstract paintings, created exclusively for this exhibit. His bright raw renderings show the importance of play in art making. Visual experiences are his subject matter. Rambling around the city of DC, hiking in the mountains, driving through the country - all toys in Kittner’s works. His works are not frivolous but joyous and free, with the serious purpose of finding nourishment for the spirit. Kittner is the Director of Touchstone Gallery in Washington, DC. He has exhibited widely in Washington, DC and Maryland, and is represented by the "eklektikos gallery" of Washington, DC. This is first solo show in Richmond.

Scott S. Phillips’ "Bled in Ground" is a series of works ranging from 1998 to the present. This Richmond, VA artist "taps into the traditions of Expressionist Art while depicting his perception of life in its manic states of tension." His unique paintings derive from a variety of personal dispositions ranging from complete elation to gross self-pity. His brightly dark creations meld odd landscapes and spatial relations with the tortured human form, where even the most docile imagery can be involved in some frenzied struggle. Phillips has exhibited in New York, Pennsylvania and Richmond.

"MayMembers Images&Icons" is the Second Annual Members’ Juried Exhibition. The 2001 group show is juried by, Diego Sanchez. Sanchez is a well-known local artist and speaker. He teaches at St. Catherine’s School, and is a member of 1708 Gallery.
