Modern Composer & Percussionist To Perform
RICHMOND, VA - Artspace is pleased to sponsor the Richmond, VA premier of English avant-garde percussionist, Chris Cutler. Cutler will perform for one-night-only at The Blue Bottle, 200 West Broad Street on Thursday, April 12 at 9pm. $ 10 cover charge at the door.
Cutler will present an evening of improvisational percussion and electronic discourse - a rare experience into the art of modern music. On this last night of his 2001 US Tour, he will be accompanied by, fellow musician, Keith Macsoud.
Chris Cutler, of Surry, England, will be a familiar name to true fans of avant-garde music and 20th century modern composition. He played in his first band in 1963 and ended up playing in London's psychedelic clubs by 1969. He has worked with numerous international artists and bands. He co-founded The Ottawa Music Co, a 22-piece Rock composer's orchestra, eventually joining British Experimental Art Rock/Progressive group Henry Cow until its demise in 1978. He has since been a member of many organizations such as the Art Bears, Gong, The News form Babel, The Nudes, P53 and The Science Group He may be best known to American audiences, as a permanent member of American bands, Pere Ube, Hail, The Residents, and The Wooden Birds. He continually works with musicians, Henry Keiser, Fred Frith, Steven Blegvad, David Thomas (Pere Ubu fame), and Linda Thompson.
He also founded and runs the independent label and distribution service ReR/Recommended Records, and until 1991, the East European label Points East. He is editor of the New Music Magazine, Unfiled and author of the music theory book, File Under Popular as well as numerous articles in 14 languages. He lectures frequently on contemporary composition and music theory, and has appeared on over 100 recordings.
