November Gallery Exhibitions:

  • "Artspace's First National Invitational Miniature Exhibition" -- Downstairs Galleries
  • Gordon Stettinius -- Skylight Gallery

  • This year's special dedication goes to Jack Wright, a wonderfully dear man who shared his writing skills and quick wit a number of times at the Artspace gallery performance series poetry/prose readings.

Marian Hollowell is one of the founding members of Artspace, and it's performance series in which she has dedicated much love and spirit.

She began her career as a singer and actress [attended VCU as a music major, applied voice]. She first performed on Richmond stages at The Virginia Museum Theater in "Camelot," as Queen Guinevere. There she met fellow Artspace member Frances Wessells, who was the show's choreographer, and also played Morgan le Fey.

Marian went on to perform at most Richmond dinner theaters including Barn Dinner Theatre, Playhouse 3200, Playhouse 301, Swift Creek Mill Playhouse, Haymarket Dinner Theatre, and Theatre IV. She also had a gig of nightclub singing at Ceasar's Cellar.

She has since added other art forms to her palette of life: poetry, prose, ink drawings, pastels, acrylic, mixed media, assemblage/sculpture, and most recently printmaking/collagraphs, monotypes, plexiglas drypoint.

As a poet, Marian has read at numerous places around town for the past 18 years. She has been published in Out O' The Blue Review, Slant, Poems of New Bohemia Anthology, The Fan Scan, Throttle, Caution, Fantasia, Eugene Oregon's Poetic Space, and Lumina /poetry and prose from the Allegheny region.

Lawrence Proman, a former theologian, computer scientist by trade, Mayan archaeologist by hobby, is still consumed by theological, political, and anthropological subjects, which lead to mirth.

He is a prolific poet and searcher, a seeker of visions, sounds, and stories. He has been published numerous times [poetry and technical publications], and has been giving public readings across the country for 20 years.

Lawrence also loves jamming with his musician friends, one of which is Forrest Mc Donald, in Atlanta, Ga., who, on the inside liner notes of his latest CD "Finger Lickin Blues", mentioned his buddy Lawrence [who himself wrote lyrics and sang on a cut from Forrest's previous CD]. Lawrence also jams with "VooDoo Screamers".

These urban jungle poets have been giving public readings together for 14 years, what Marian calls a gypsy dozen. Some of these places include Artspace, The Flood Zone, Jenny's, Franklin Gallery, Pope Gallery, Off the Main Gallery/UAA/Shockoe Bottom, Main Street Station, Henry Street gallery, and walking down alley's in the fan, notebooks and pen in hand, ready for that spontaneous combustion of the spoken word.

The "Everybody Play Nice" series consists of mainly new material with a few old gems thrown in. Keeping up with their own poetic [and otherwise] view of the world within and around them [and otherwise] throughout each year... they write and perform.
