    Exhibition Statement

Four artists explore similar ideas through the making of personal objects. Karl Burkheimer's precious boxes, John Rais' forged baskets, Felicia Szorad's enameled hats, and Travis Townsend's surreal devices all share a fascination with the issues of containment and function. These artists approach their media from a craft background (metalsmithing and woodworking) and seek the enhancement of the ordinary and sensitivity to material that comes from such a connection. While achieving this subtlety of craftsmanship, each one layers on their own individual concepts that push their work out of traditional categories.

The steps being taken by these four artists are unique to contemporary art. They are remaking the role of the art object by keeping it connected to everyday life.
