  • Scott S. Phillips, from Richmond, Virginia, taps into the traditions of Expressionist Art while depicting his perception of life in its manic states of tension. Phillips describes his work as "together but not intimate, just fleeting." The ideas for his images are inspired by his mood as well as introverted concepts embodying an emotional tension. This is explicitly seen in his densely interwoven color and disturbing disembodied human forms. Even the most docile of imagery seems to be involved in some frenzied struggle caused by the banalities of existence and a freedom from a supposed Armageddon. The spatial relations of Georgio De Chirico, odd landscape perspectives of Wayne Thiebaud and the figure studies as well as narcissism of Egon Shiele have all influenced Phillips' art. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and within the last ten years he has exhibited his artwork in numerous group shows as well as juried exhibitions in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and most recently New York.
