Keith M. Ramsey
painter
BFA Virginia Commonwealth University 1998
Taking what seemed to be a non-threatening approach to my work and
painting what I thought the public would accept, I felt "safe" in my
work, but it began to lose meaning to me.
During some years of wading through a deep and painful sense of
social isolation I began depicting my world in oil on canvas. The bright
"non-threatening" paintings were forced into darkness where internal
questions and fear became prevalent, which opened a door to an important
artistic crossroad.
Elongated shadows accompanied by bright, vibrant colors and intense
lighting work to create images born from experience and ideals.
Inspired by thc art of Arron Douglas' divided images, the mystery of
Salvador Dali and Balthus, and shadows, colors, and the emotionally
driven paintings of Edward Hopper. These influences assist the works
ranging from abstract expressionist self-portraits to thought induced
social commentaries.
