ARTIST'S STATEMENT
These
pieces are expressions of rhythm and thought, and studies of
perception. They embody the scar tissue of grief and the layers of
personal comprehension. The interwoven pieces of canvas and the
dimensional angles hold together in the same sinewy manner of family
relationships. I explore the path of the individual versus the group's
domain, and the shifting and testing of family patterns after loss and
death.
These pieces are made with canvas or other fabric, paper, and acrylic
paint. I also incorporated other ordinary household materials that
appealed to me in tactile ways--such as netting, tissue paper, cotton
string, and paper grocery bags. As I explored the media, I made several
small models of the larger pieces to test out different materials and
methods. For the stretchers of these models, I used Popsicle sticks.
The small versions appealed to me, especially once I began to examine
the tiny models in relation to each other. I was also entertained by
the irony of having the stretcher on the canvas, rather than the canvas
on the stretcher.
