Richmond Esoteric Art League
October 6-29, 2000
WWW.REALART.ORG PREMIER NEW WORKS AT ARTSPACE
Sometimes known as being a bit controversial, but always stylistically pure, artists of the Richmond Esoteric Art League (REALart) will present new works for their first showing together as a group. (Some of the artists of REALart were present in the very successful Punchline exhibit, "Artzilla" held at Artspace in November 1999.)
Local artists, Jason Andrews, Jorge Benitez, Jeff Hathaway, Jack Lawrence, Jamie Pocklington, and Tomas Van Auken are joined by Brooklyn-based artist, Tim Wilson, for an investigation into new figurative realism. Modern academics call realism passť but could they render like these guys? It is doubtful. Benitez and Lawrence bring a photo-realistic quality to their canvases with debate. Benitez is best known for his large gun paintings that premiered at Artspace in June, and Lawrence is best remembered for his body of work that was removed from the walls of the Barksdale Theatre. Another local favorite to be questioned is Van Auken, who was censored in the state of Texas. Hathaway and Pocklington are known for large, extreme portraiture that balances on the edge of pop. Andrews and Wilson’s works are best unlabeled – see them for yourself on www.realart.org. Two mystery artists will be exhibiting along with the REALartists. Who are they? It is rumored that they are linked to the group.
Working together as the Richmond Esoteric Art League has created a dialogue for a style that has lost momentum in the years of modernism. Their group dynamic provides a vehicle for community, discussion and education. They also pursue their individual beliefs and talents through successful exhibitions and gallery representation. Artspace continues to bring cutting-edge contemporary art to the forefront of the Richmond community.
